I was just having this conversation with a fellow business owner friend of mine. He was telling me about how the attitude around the office has really improved since the news has been reporting all kinds of layoffs. Apparently the employees are getting wind of this and are starting to realize that they too could be the victims of corporate cost cutting measures.
Why does it take a recession to get people to appreciate their jobs? I have to admit that when I was in his office I noticed a remarkable change. For the last couple of years, whenever I would pay him a visit, you would see a couple of the girls in the office kind of screwing off and talking about non-work related things. They would be talking about the guys they were dating or where they were going to go partying this weekend. They usually talked about that sort of thing.
Now all of a sudden things have changed. When I walked in there this time, those two girls were each sitting at their own desks for a change. One of them was on the telephone with a customer while the other one had her head down while she was obviously focused on some kind of paperwork. When I walked in, they politely acknowledged me and smiled. Then it was right back to business. I must say I was quite impressed. These ladies appeared to be dedicated professional employees. What a shocker.
Fortunately this business is not as sensitive to this recession as some other industries are. I doubt they will be looking to layoff anyone anytime soon. I'm not going to tell his employees that though. They are finally getting the kind of work done that they should have been getting done while times were good. They should have taken some time to appreciate the fact that they had these great jobs instead of taking them for granted.
How are things where you work? Are you taking things for granted a little bit? Maybe you should think about rededicating yourself to your performance at work. It certainly isn't going to hurt you any. If you manage to adopt that attitude when times are good as well as bad, you will ensure yourself a slightly more secure position for when things are tough. Don't think that business owners ignore these things. They don't. They know who their hardest workers are. They know who puts their nose to the grindstone as well as who is more focused on Friday or Saturday night.
